Week of June 18 – 24 // Forgiven & Free // 1 John 2:12-14

How does God's grace apply to our guilt or shame?

Box 7 Tip:

If you are beginning tour this week, there will be change in your routines, stress levels, and how you spend time with God. Take a couple extra minutes to think, pray, or seek advice at your corps about how to navigate this transition.

  • For bus rides before/after shows, how can you build a habit to spend a few minutes being refreshed by Jesus?
  • If you have a new tour job on the road, what people in that tour job routine can you pursue for a God-centered relationship?

Plan: looking ahead a few days, how will I spend time with God?

Pray: where & when will I pray? what & who will I pray for?

Pursue: who is in my Focus Group, and how will we set aside time?

Gospel of John 16:25-33

Psalm 100

As we become a member of God's family, our fundamental identity is changed. We no longer define our identity base on activities, relationships, or mistakes. We can instead rest our true identity on Jesus, trusting in who He has declared us to be.

Key Verse

  • "... I write to you young men, because you are strong, and the word of God abides in you, and you have overcome the evil one.” 1 John 2:14

Pray

  • Suggested prayer: “Father God, I confess I sometimes dwell on and live out of my past identity. Please wash my conscience clean from guilt and shame. Help me to receive forgiveness and freedom through Jesus. Amen.”

Respond - Personal Reflection & Obedience

What are thoughts or beliefs you have about yourself that trap you in feelings of worthlessness or self-pity?

As a believer in Jesus, do these thoughts or feelings line up with the declarations of truth in 1 John 2:12-14?

How can you make a practice of personally meditating on the Gospel for your identity?

Share - Focus Group Times

As tour begins, you might need to adjust how your Focus Group works, or switch people in groups because of the new routines. Honestly ask your group if things are working for them. Face-to-face is better for this conversation than texting. Remember that that it only takes a few minutes to read the Bible, pray together, use the Discovery Bible Study format, or ask the discussion points below.
