Week of August 6 – 11 // Keep Yourself from Idols // 1 John 5:18-21

Why should we guard ourselves from idolatry?

Box 7 Tip:

For this last week together, if you have final words for people in your corps, make a short list of the ones you would like to pursue a moment with. You can think through these kinds of conversations: who should I thank? who do I need to apologize to? who should I resolve conflict with? who in my section should I affirm publicly for their character? what staff member should I thank for what they taught me? who has been a faithful servant of Jesus?

Plan: how will I spend time with God as I finish DCI and travel home?

Pray: what will I pray for? how will my prayer habits shift after DCI?

Pursue: who should I talk with this week to affirm, apologize, or thank?

Romans 1:18-25

The closing thought about idols in 1 John seems random, but even in modern times (especially during DCI Championships) we struggle with the ancient desire to pursue idols rather than God. Let's consider what controls our hearts, and how to turn to the greater beauty of Jesus.

Key Verse

  • "And we know that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding, so that we may know him who is true; and we are in him who is true, in his Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life. Little children, keep yourself from idols." 1 John 4:20-21

Father in Heaven, as we finish this season of drum corps we want to glorify you for the creative abilities and community you have given us. You are the only affection we can have for eternity. Help us to love you with all my mind, heart, soul, and strength. In Christ's name, Amen.”
