Re-Thinking “Space” for Box 7 in Denton

Map of UNT and Surrounding Facilities most Connected with Box 7

This past weekend, we brought together an alumni / staff group for re-thinking how Box 7  approaches headquarters, teamwork, and ministry in Denton. We considered the dynamic of campus, student life, workspace for the national ministry, and housing in Denton (housing for students, staff leadership, and bi-vocational leaders with Box 7).  Music-major friends who work for the UNT Union and for UNT Housing gave us tours of key facilities.

We brought in a “consultant” to have a fresh voice, Chris Doiron, who is a Box 7 alum from Carolina Crown and actively teaches in DCI at Legends. Chris has experience in college ministry at LSU with the marching band, but is professionally an architect based in Baton Rouge, working regularly on university projects across the U.S. He quickly understood the vision for Box 7, as well as the separation of needs between national ministry (Box 7 Central) and local college ministry (Box 7 @ UNT).  He is a creative thinker who can put together the big picture of student lives, schedule patterns, healthy work environments, and how evangelism and discipleship can occur through thoughtful use of space.

Here is some of what we learned: Continue reading Re-Thinking “Space” for Box 7 in Denton

Welcome Back to Spring 2017!

Originally sent as an email to guys who attended the Box 7 Wednesday dinner/Bible study group last semester.

Hey Guys!

Welcome back to a new semester. I hope that as you are charting your course for the next few months that you are excited about the opportunities…. to continue growing in your knowledge and skills as musicians and leaders around UNT, while having a community around you that is on mission for Gospel-transformation in our lives and for our those around us who need the hope of Jesus.

I want to take a moment to celebrate some of how God was working last semester:

  • The most intact Christian community of UNT music majors and DCI people in more than 5 years.
  • Learning the bigger, foundational story of God and His people through the book of Genesis
  • Several students studying God’s Word for the first time
  • More guys and girls stepping into regular habits of worship and church attendance in Denton, gaining Christ-centered friendships outside the College of Music
  • Growing friendships across different departments – brass, woodwind, percussion, jazz, etc.
  • At least one student, observing the Box 7 community, is reconsidering faith in Jesus because of seeing those teachings lived out. In high school, he chose to walk away from Christianity.

What you guys are part of is encouraging to people outside of UNT as well. Over Thanksgiving break, I described our Box 7 community to a Texas State trombone player named Matt, who has marched Troopers, he said, “I really want something like that to start at Texas State.” I suggest that you share the vision and story of this community at other places! Sometimes people just need permission that ‘it’s been done before’ to start something in their own subculture, dorm, or community.

Thank you for joining in this year as Karl and I are learning together how to lead, how to juggle our time, and how to support you guys. Personally, I want to thank you for patience with me as I always have to balance both national responsibilities for Box 7 while still being available and prayerful for you guys. Some exciting news is that I finished my initial fundraising for full-time ministry in December (right after Finals). I’m humbled by how God has provided financially to meet that goal. I am freed up from that focus on support-raising; it’s exciting to plan more for the next steps of the organization, and to be more present with you.

Here are a few basics we want all of you to know for Spring 2017:

  • We will continue the Wednesday evening dinner/Bible study group. Tomorrow we will meet at the same time as last semester (6:45-8:15), but we will change that time for the rest of the semester to be more convenient with your spring schedules. Come tomorrow to discuss, and invite a friend!
  • The Wednesday group will study Romans 12-15 to begin this semester. This is an important text for how the Gospel affects our unity, honoring each other, and active love, especially during a divided time in the U.S. The sermons at The Village Church Denton will be on Romans 12-15 starting on January 29.
  • Optional: There will be new small groups (3-4 people) meeting on campus, or in your housing (rather than at the Box 7 housing). These smaller groups will be planned in mornings and afternoons, primarily with people from your classes, ensembles, roommates, or drum corps involvement, to help facilitate discipleship (becoming more like Jesus) in those settings. Our goal is to have 3 of these groups start for a full-semester commitment. Karl will contact you to invite you to schedule a group. He will ask for your schedule, just like a private lesson teacher would, to have a snapshot of when you can meet.
  • For those planning to belong to The Village Church in Denton: We want to encourage more of you to attend the 5:00pm worship services this spring. Karl will normally attend at 5:00. I will normally attend 9:00am and stay until the 11:15 service begins (to see you guys if you come for either service). Sunday afternoons, I will normally work at the office (1 block from church) and walk over to church around 6:30 to see people after the service.

Then a couple FAQ’s: Continue reading Welcome Back to Spring 2017!
