God's Story - God’s story is a story of love and redemption. The story or message that most clearly shows this redemptive love is the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus (John 3:16). This message is of “first importance,” according to one early leader in the Christian church (1 Corinthians 15:3). As God reveals His nature through the Bible, the following teachings emerge as the most central, guiding beliefs for our story of following Jesus:
God - There is one true God, eternally existing in three Persons, God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit (Romans 8:22-25, Ephesians 1:13-14)
Jesus Christ - Jesus was miraculously born of the Virgin Mary (Luke 1:35). He lived a sinless life and personally demonstrated the character of God. He died on the cross as a perfect sacrifice, paying the debt for our sins (Mark 10:45). He arose from the dead on the third day shoring His victory over sin and death (1 Cor. 15:3-8).
Holy Spirit - The Holy Spirit makes people aware of their need for Christ. He indwells and empowers people who trust in Christ (1 John 4:13, Gal. 5:16-26).
Salvation - Salvation is a free gift of God. The death of Christ on the cross is the only sufficient payment for our sins. All have sinned, but all can be saved. This salvation is available for any who put their trust in Christ as Savior (Rom. 3:23, Rom. 6:23, John 3:16).
Being a Disciple - The invitation to follow Jesus is a personal, lifelong journey of believing, obeying, and being transformed by the teachings of Jesus in all of life. (Matthew 5-7, Romans 12:1-2)
Making Disciples - God’s redemptive story is continued through his people by making more disciples who follow Jesus. Disciple-making was modeled and commissioned by Jesus as a loving invitation for all people to enter His Kingdom. (Matt. 28:18-20, 2 Tim 2:2)
Baptism - Baptism is an act of obedience to Christ and a symbol of new life in Christ (Romans 6:3-4).
Communion - The Lord’s Supper is a time to remember the death, burial, and resurrection of Christ (Matt. 18)
Church - The Church is the Body of Christ on earth, a global community empowered by the Holy Spirit to continue the task of making disciples of Jesus, proclaiming the Good News of Jesus, and practicing the teachings of Jesus. (Eph. 4:1-16).
Bible - The Bible is the inspired word of God and is the final authority in life and doctrine (2 Tim. 3:16).
Christ’s Return - Christ will one day return (1 Thess. 4:13-18).
